Description

Soil health can be improved with cover crops, reduced tillage, and organic amendments like compost but growers do not always know how specific factors like compost rate and source impact soil quality. At this tailgate Charlotte Decock Assistant Professor in Earth & Soil Science at Cal Poly shares findings of recent trials studying the effect of compost application rate and the effect of vermicompost versus standard dairy compost application to vineyards.

Following the presentation, attendees get to see an estate compost operation at Niner Wine Estates. The original goal of composting onsite to reduce costs, waste, and carbon emissions turned into a holistic system for building viability and resilience in both the Heart Hill Vineyard and the Chef’s Garden. The right combination of materials from the estate is used to create organic compost and compost teas by way of thermal aerobic composting which is monitored and managed using microscopy and laboratory analysis. Niner Wine Estates’ Winemaker Patrick Muran will show attendees his active compost operation and discuss the tricks of producing a quality product along with Linnea Smith of Vineyard Professional Services and Taylor Jones of Star Lane and Dierberg Vineyards, LLC.
